Sevres plate Olympic Service – Theseus killing the centaur Eurytus at the wedding of Pirithous and Hippodamia

Sevres Plate Olympic Service 15

In Greek mythology, the centaur Eurytus was slain by Theseus at the wedding of Pirithous and Hippodamia. Eurytus, overcome with wine and lust, attempted to abduct the bride, Hippodamia, sparking a chaotic brawl between the Lapiths (Pirithous’s people) and the Centaurs.
Theseus, a guest at the wedding and a close friend of Pirithous, intervened to rescue Hippodamia. In the ensuing battle, Theseus confronted and ultimately killed Eurytus by throwing a wine krater at his head. The battle, known as the Centauromachy, continued until the Lapiths, with the help of Theseus, drove off the Centaurs
