Sevres – Vues Diverses

This small topographical service was begun during the Napoleonic period, but was completed in 1817 and delivered to Louis XVIII.  It contained 48 plates which are all shown below. The following plates were painted by Jacques Swebach after the 18th-century engravings created by printmaker Matthias de Sallieth (1749–1791), a prolific engraver active in Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Dirk de Jong (active c. 1779–1786) provided the drawings for a series of Dutch harbor views – a large collection of harbor prints published in Amsterdam between 1779 and 1786. These engravings and subsiquently the porcelain plates captured the intricate maritime life of the era showing traditional Dutch sailing ships and key architectural landmarks of the port cities in the background.
