A German sculptor and porcelain modeler best known for his work with the Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin. Robra became associated with KPM at a young age and developed into one of the manufactory’s notable designers of animal figures. His work reflects the strong tradition of naturalistic porcelain sculpture that KPM had cultivated since the eighteenth century, but with a cleaner and more modern early twentieth-century sensibility.
Robra is especially remembered for his bird figures. At KPM, he modeled a variety of small porcelain birds, including sparrows, doves, peacocks, kingfishers, lovebirds, and other carefully observed species. These works are usually compact in scale, but they show a strong understanding of posture, movement, and character. Rather than making the birds overly decorative or exaggerated, Robra often captured them in simple, lifelike moments: perched, alert, calling, or resting. This gave his figures a natural charm that made them appealing both as porcelain art objects and as collectible animal sculptures.
Robra’s porcelain birds also fit well into the broader artistic taste of the early twentieth century, when collectors admired refined animal sculpture, clean forms, and high-quality craftsmanship. KPM’s precise porcelain body and careful glazing allowed Robra’s modeling to appear crisp and elegant.
