Anton Puchegger (1878–1917)

Anton Puchegger Portrait Photo

An Austrian animal sculptor active mainly in Berlin. Trained as a wood carver in Bozen and later at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, he developed a specialty in animal sculpture after study in Paris. From about 1905 he worked as an independent artist in Berlin, where he studied animals at the Berlin Zoological Garden. Around 1909 he began designing porcelain animal figures for KPM Berlin. His work combines close natural observation with the simplified, angular forms of early modern sculpture, standing between Jugendstil and Expressionism.
