A peasant woman in Baden (historical territory in South Germany) traditional costume: With the black costume consisting of a long skirt and tailored jacket, the young woman wears the eye-catching ‘Bollenhut’, which has been the traditional costume of Protestant women in three neighboring Black Forest villages since around 1800, and has become a symbol of the entire Black Forest region.
The ‘Bollen’ are red for unmarried women, black for married women, and a silk bonnet is worn underneath, which is tied under the chin.
