In 1844 his life-size group “Margaret of Anjou and her Son” was highly commended in the first sculpture contest at Westminster Hall. This work received mixed reviews. The Literary Gazette considered Margaret ‘a virago’ and her son ‘a poor attenuated, impudent lad’ (Gunnis, 247) but the work so impressed one of the judges, Samuel Joseph, that he took MacBride into his studio without charging his usual fee of 500 guineas.

Margaret of Anjou was Queen of England by marriage to King Henry VI from 1445 to 1461 and again from 1470 to 1471. Through marriage, she was also nominally Queen of France from 1445 to 1453.
She was known as the fierce and dominant Queen of England who led the Lancastrian forces during the Wars of the Roses. Because her husband, King Henry VI, suffered from severe mental illness, she practically ran the country and fought aggressively to keep the crown for her son
