Sevres plate – Olympic Service – Baby Oedipus

Sevres Plate Olympic Service 06

Porcelain painter: Perrenot.
Baby Oedipus, the son of King Laius and Queen Jocasta of Thebes, was destined to kill his father and marry his mother according to a prophecy. To try and avert this fate, Laius ordered a servant to abandon the infant on a mountainside with his ankles pinned. A shepherd found the baby and, taking pity on him, brought him to King Polybus and Queen Merope of Corinth, who adopted him. They named him Oedipus, meaning “swollen foot,” due to the injury from his ankles being pinned.

Another plate “Hercules” by Perrenot.
