The plate depicts Nereid Thetis and Oceanid Eurynome rescuing and taking care of Vulcan, after Hera, his mother, disgusted by his misshapen and lame appearance at birth, hurled him from Mount Olympus into the sea.
Porcelain painter: Henri-Albert Adam (1766-1820), the Genevan miniaturist who collaborated with the Sèvres Imperial Manufactory at the beginning of the Empire in 1806 and 1807, before working for the Russian Court from 1808. Adam is listed in the factory’s registers as a figurist painter alongside Swebach, Leguay, Parant and Jacquotot during these two years; he was commissioned to decorate several shaped pieces (plates, serving cups) with mythological scenes, some in the cameo style, and in 1807 participated in the decoration for the Olympic service.
