the forest of Compiègne where the oak of Saint-Jean, dating back to the 13th century, still exists.

The Saint Jean oak is one of the oldest forest oaks in France, located near Saint-Jean-aux-Bois in the Compiègne forest. Planted by monks of the abbey of Saint-Jean in the 13th century during the reign of Saint Louis. Its branches are long cut “tadpole” to give firewood. This treatment has promoted the development of fungi that now completely parasitite it. In 1970, children lit a fire in the trunk to destroy a wasp nest. The fire damaged the base of the trunk. The oak is 25 meters high, its trunk reaches more than 8 meters in circumference and its diameter is 2.45 meters. Unfortunately, it lost its main branch in 2011.
