An article from The Art-Journal Illustrated Catalogue of the International Exhibition, 1862
discussing Messrs. Phillips and Minton’s dessert service:
“Messrs. W. P. and G. PHILLIPS, of Oxford Street and New Bond Street, are large exhibitors of works in Ceramic Art, and in cut and engraved glass. They are not manufacturers, except in this sense—that they give “commissions” and furnish designs to the several manufacturers, and obtain productions made exclusively and specially for them… The objects we engrave on this page are produced for Messrs. Phillips, at MINTON’s renowned Manufactory, Stoke-upon-Trent; they are designed by Phoenix, and consist of the usual pieces of a DESSERT SERVICE; the comports are supported by figures representing the four Seasons, while the baskets have groups of dancing-boys for their supports. These baskets are perforated, and ornamented with much delicacy and taste. The centre-piece is a remarkable work, with much originality of style, and good arrangement. Three graceful figures are placed above three shells, and bear a large basket for fruit or flowers. The whole of the figures are of “Parian,” lightly touched with colour and gold. The service altogether is one of the best of the many excellent productions of British porcelain manufacture issued from Stoke-upon-Trent.”
