The shape of this vase copies that of a Japanese bronze, and the decoration is drawn from both Chinese and Japanese sources. The painted motifs are executed in the cloisonné style where the colored enamels are outlined in gold. This vase reflects one aspect of Dresser’s deep interest in Japanese art, which informed his work in regard to both shapes and decorative schemes.
