Vue de Fréjus. After the illustration by Vivant Denon (Plate 91) to his ‘Voyage dans la Basse et la Haute Egypte, pendant les campagnes du Général Bonaparte’, 1802.
The plate depicts Napoleon’s return to Fréjus after his campaign in Egypt. He landed in Fréjus (Var, France) on October 9, 1799, after narrowly escaping British ships. He used his popularity from the Egyptian campaign to orchestrate the Coup of 18 Brumaire, overthrowing the Directory and establishing the Consulate, with himself as First Consul.
