Sevres plate – Service Olympique – Pan chasing Syrinx

Sevres Plate Olympic Service 23

In Greek mythology, Pan, the lusty satyr god of the wild, pursued the nymph Syrinx, who was devoted to Artemis and her vow of chastity. Syrinx, in her desperation to escape Pan’s advances, prayed to be transformed, and was ultimately changed into cattail reeds by the river Ladon. Pan, upon finding only reeds where Syrinx had been, fashioned panpipes from them, naming them syrinx in her memory.
