Antinous, a young Greek man, was the beloved companion and lover of the Roman emperor Hadrian, who was deified after his untimely death prior to his 20th birthday. Hadrian established a cult in his honor, with temples and cities named after Antinous who became a symbol of beauty and tragic youth in classical antiquity.
