Sevres service iconographique plate “Epicure”

After the engraving from Philosophers section of “Iconographie grecque” (Pl. 25) by Ennio Quirino Visconti published in 1808 in Paris. Visconti (1751-1818) was an Italian antiquarian and art historian, papal Prefect of Antiquities, and an expert on ancient Roman sculpture. Published by order of Napoleon copies of this three volume work were given out as gifts.
The engraving depicted the Roman double-bust from 2nd century of Metrodorus (330–277 BC) and Epicurus (341–270 BC) located in Louvre which in turn derived from seated figures created in the first half of the 3rd century BC, probably in bronze.
